Tempted? Here are some of our favourite places to look at…

Albufeira

Albufeira was once a small fishing village, but is now one of the most popular resorts in Portugal – and it’s easy to see why. The area has pretty cobbled streets in the Old Town leading up to modern bars and restaurants. You’re better off staying in the Old Town if you’re looking for a quieter holiday, or for a lively experience, with all the bright lights and music to go with it, the Areias de São João area will be right up your street. The two main beaches here (perfect for families) are also definitely worth a mention, both offering a range of facilities.

Alvor

Another Algarve resort which is slightly quieter than Albufeira, Alvor attracts visitors from across Portugal and the UK. Once a small fishing village, Alvor is perfect for beach lovers with plenty of space to lounge around in, and warm waters for anyone who fancies a dip. Alternatively, Alvor also has a few fantastic golf courses to choose from if you want to avoid the sand for a day or two – unless you end up in the bunker!

Lagos

Lagos offers an abundance of architecture, beaches and nightlife – what more could you ask for on a holiday? This town in the Barlavento region of the Algarve attracts people of all ages and provides a range of things to do, whether you want to explore during the day, or you only come out when the sun goes down. If you are looking to go out in an evening, you’ll find a wide selection of bars, restaurants and clubs along, or nearby, the main strip in the Old Town, Rua 25 de Abril, perfect for the younger crowd.

Funchal

As the capital of the island of Madeira, Funchal is a modern and cosmopolitan city. During the day, you can take a stroll through the cobbled Old Town, chill out on the beach or enjoy a drink at a café overlooking the harbour. If you do want to party in Funchal, you definitely have the opportunity to do so on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights – with some clubs staying open until 7am! Big fan of football? The city was also the birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo!

Faro

If it’s non-stop partying you’re looking for on your summer holiday, Faro is the place for you. Located in central Algarve, Faro is the capital of the region, offering everything from shopping and museums to cobbled streets and beaches. Many of the bars and clubs in Faro can be found in and around Rua do Prior, where you can mingle and unwind with locals and tourists alike.
