Bansko

Bansko is the biggest resort in Bulgaria, and a popular choice  among many Brits thanks to its great value. This resort is a must visit for those who want to ski on a budget, or are unsure if they will like it. Before embarking on a more expensive visit to the Alps or even heading across the pond to the states, Bansko offers a great taster into the world of Skiing.

The town of Bansko is located at about 1000m above sea level, making the temperature slightly than that of the ski resort itself. The quaint village is full of old stone buildings and cobbled streets, and is very accommodating to tourists with plenty of places to eat. Meanwhile the ski area of Bansko is at an altitude of 2000 – 2600m, producing reliable snow every season lasting all the way into May. The ski resort features a total of 70km of ski runs, which is not a huge amount but enough to keep even intermediate skiers busy. Be aware that the resort is mostly aimed at beginners, and only features a few black runs.

A helpful tip for anyone visiting, a gondola lift is required to reach the ski resort from the village, so getting up early is advisable to avoid long queues.

The smaller of the two resorts, Borovets features 58km of skiing split into 3 zones, ranging from low down runs of 1400m all the way up to 2400m. For a ski in-ski out experience in Bulgaria, Borovets is the best option, with most of the hotels being located around the main resort complex. All the restaurants are conveniently in the same area, perfect for a hassle free trip.

Tip: To avoid queues for the gondola that takes you to the top station, avoid times of 9am – 11am. Also make sure to buy your lift ticket before you arrive to get a discount.
