Located off the west coast of Africa, the Canary Islands can be reached in around 3 hours, and it is blessed with sunshine all year. With its relatively short flight time from the UK, and with a great choice of islands to visit, including Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, the Canaries is a great option to escape the cold. For any beach lovers, Corralejo in Fuerteventura is one of the best around. Hikers should head to Tenerife, which has some of the most scenic volcanic landscapes in Europe.
Located in North Africa, Morocco has an abundance of winter sun resorts, including the ever-popular city destination of Marrakech. Here, you can find amazing resorts on the outskirts of the city, along with a thrilling city centre full of intoxicating smells, sights and sounds. For a beach break, head to the Atlantic Coast where Agadir has some of the best coastlines in the country.
If you’re willing to travel a bit further than Europe and North Africa, Mexico has almost guaranteed sunshine, beautiful beaches and amazing food. Cancun is as good a holiday destination as any if it’s sandy beaches you’re after – head to the Chac Mool Beach for a sunbathe and a spot of diving! Historical sites like the Chichen Itza can be reached within a couple of hours too!

Although mainland Spain may not be red-hot during the winter months, destinations on the south coast like Costa Del Sol have a more than pleasant climate. The mild climate is a noticeable improvement from the UK’s harsh winter, and with an average of around 15°c, provides perfect conditions for exploring. The beaches and golf resorts can be found in abundance, and you are within reach of day trips to the likes of charming cities like Malaga and Granada.
