Although summer holidays for 2020 seem in doubt, many countries are beginning plans to reopen their tourism industries. Holidays for autumn are looking increasingly likely, so we’ve decided to have a look at 5 great October destinations.

Lanzarote: 27ºC average high

What is there to say about the Canary Islands that hasn’t already been said? Lanzarote is the perfect destination for off-season sunshine and beautiful coastlines. With the recent news of Spain looking to begin reopening its tourism industry, there is every likelihood that by October you’ll be able to jet off to a luxury resort like Costa Teguise and relax on a sandy beach like Playa de las Cucharas.

Costa Brava: 21ºC average high

Although slightly cooler than the Canaries at this time of year, mainland Spain – and in particular the North-Eastern region Costa Brava – offers plenty of sunshine at autumn time. Lloret de Mar is a holidaymaker-favourite, with its glorious Mediterranean beaches and hilltop medieval castle; this is a safe bet for a tranquil break later this year.

Cyprus: 27ºC average high

The Cyprus tourism board recently said hotels would reopen in July, but only to certain nearby nations with COVID-19 under control. However, with any luck, by October Cyprus will be open to UK holidaymakers too. With averages highs of 27ºC, and a short flight time of under 5 hours, Cyprus is a great autumn destination with beach resorts in Ayia Napa and Paphos in abundance.

Sharm El Sheikh: 32ºC average high

The hottest destination on this list, Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt is perfect in October for sun-seekers and beach lovers. Domestic tourism has now resumed in the North African hotspot, and international tourism could soon follow. Many hotels across the resort offer great all inclusive packages, making the destination a value-for-money family favourite.

Malta: 24ºC average high

The island of Malta on Mediterranean sea has average October highs of 24ºC, and with charming coastal cities like the capital Valletta and popular beach resorts like St Paul’s Bay, there are plenty of reasons to make this your autumn holiday spot. Malta’s chamber of SME recently suggested the country could reopen for tourism with other countries that have COVID-19 under control.
