The Greek island of Rhodes is a truly unique island that features some of the oldest history on the entire continent. It is a true history-lovers paradise as well as having plenty of things to do and see for those just looking for a beautiful getaway in the Greek sun. Here is our list of the ten best things to do and see on the island…

Rhodes City

Rhodes City is the tourist hub and the beating heart of Rhodes. Cobbled streets, quiet courtyards and walls with a significant amount of history to tell are just some of the things to discover here.

It is a beautiful place to wander through and get lost a little bit. You will find a number of boutique shops, cafes, restaurants and an all round peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

Lindos Acropolis

This historical part of Rhodes dates back to the 7th Century BC with the Mycenaeans. If you travel to the top of the rock you will find some of the very best views that Rhodes has to offer.

With the following eras of the Byzantines, Knights of St John and Ottomans all accommodating this part of the world, there is now a selection of ruins and treasures from all different periods of human history to discover.

Kameiros

Kameiros features the ruins of an ancient city that used to be one of the largest urban centres on the island, long before Rhodes City was built.

Here you will find all sorts of relics and evidence of eras past, including an acropolis, a temple to Athena, stoas, a reservoir and a fountain house to name just a few.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

This stunning Byzantine Citadel dates back to the 7th century and even at its grand old age, is actually one of the most ‘modern’ attractions in Rhodes.

The castle was in its prime during the 14th century when the Knights Hospitaller turned the fortress into their base as well as being a luxurious residence for the grand masters of the time. Today it is a museum with plenty to explore.

Mandraki Port

Mandraki Port is a beautiful area to explore on foot that is situated in the north of Rhodes. It is a great place to watch the boats and yachts coming and going with the spectacular Fort of St. Nicholas in the background.

This is also the supposed location of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven ancient wonders of the world that was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BC.

Monolithos Castle

Monolithos Castle is one of the most ‘off-the-beaten-track’ attractions on this list but is certainly worth doing if you have the opportunity. It was raised by the Knights of St John and was never conquered.

The history of the place is just as good as the view. If you can manage to skirt around the rocky paths towards the edges of the cliff, you will experience panoramic views of the area, including the Dodecanese Islands.

St. Paul’s Beach

Located right next to the Lindos Acropolis is one of Rhodes’s best beaches. This sandy beach is relatively small and is usually bustling with activity, particularly in the summer months.

The often large crowds come to bathe in the famously transparent, shallow and tranquil waters which are simply an unforgettable experience.

Prasonisi

Prasonisi is one of Rhodes’s relatively hidden gems as it is so far south on the island, away from most of the touristy destinations. It is a tidal island that can be completely cut-off by water during the winter months.

It is a hotspot for hiking due to it being a nature reserve, sunbathing for those looking for quieter beaches and windsurfing is also popular here too.

Kalithea Hot Springs

The hot springs at Kalithea have been frequently visited by people far and wide since ancient times. It is one of the most peaceful places to visit on the entire island.

Nowadays, the pavilion and pergolas that envelope the area are usually rented out for functions and for a small fee, you can bathe in Kalithea Bay. Where you will find the famously transparent water, fewer people and sun loungers to relax on.

Symi Island

Symi Island isn’t part of Rhodes itself but is definitely worth a day-trip and is only a short journey away. This quiet and picturesque place is one of the most beautiful destinations in this part of the world.

Be sure to visit the incredible Pedi and Chora Beach to catch some sun. Having a wander through the old town and Panormitis Monastery is also highly recommended.
