Packing for a trip can be both exciting and a tad overwhelming. Amidst the whirlwind of anticipation and planning, there’s always that one moment when you stand before your suitcase, pondering: what’s the first thing to go in? As seasoned travellers, we all have our rituals, quirks, and must-haves when it comes to packing. But have you ever wondered what others prioritise?

We recently ran a poll on our Facebook page, asking fellow holiday-goers what they toss into their luggage first. The responses were intriguing, providing a peek into the diverse packing habits of our community. Let’s delve into the data and see if your packing priorities align with the majority.

1. Towels & Underwear

Topping the list with 13.4% each were beach towels/towels and underwear. Makes sense, doesn’t it? After all, clean undergarments and a cosy towel for post-swim lounging are essentials for most travellers, especially those jetting off to hotter and sunnier destinations. So, are these items the first ones you grab when packing for a getaway?

2. Shoes & Trainers

Following closely behind at 12.1% were shoes/trainers. Whether you’re strolling through cobblestone streets or hiking up mountains, the right footwear sets the foundation for comfortable adventures. Usually taking up plenty of space, it makes sense to get them in first. Do you agree, or do you have a different approach to shoe-packing strategy?

3. Swimwear

For some, the anticipation of hitting the beach takes precedence, as indicated by 11.4% prioritising swimwear. Maybe it’s a case of wanting to pack these first out of excitement rather than for specific practical reasons.

3. Tea Bags

Now, here’s where it gets interesting – 7.4% of respondents chose tea bags as their top packing priority. A testament to the power of a comforting cuppa, even on far-flung adventures in foreign lands. Are you one of those people that considers your favourite tea blend a travel essential?

4. Medication

At 4.7%, both extension leads and medication made an appearance. Practicality meets health – two crucial aspects of any journey. Very hard to argue with these, but perhaps a tad surprising that medication wasn’t a more popular choice given its importance.

5. Flip Flops & Toiletries

Meanwhile, 2.7% opted for flip flops, embracing the carefree spirit of holidays and a different 2.7% who prioritise their toiletry bag first and foremost. From toothpaste to sunscreen, having all your grooming essentials in one place can certainly ease pre-trip stress.

6. Marmite

Lastly, a mere 1.3% declared Marmite as their inaugural suitcase inhabitant. A niche choice, perhaps, but for those who can’t do without their favourite spread, it’s a non-negotiable. Is there a particular culinary delight you absolutely must-pack when travelling?

As diverse as these responses are, they all reflect the unique needs and preferences of holiday-makers worldwide. So, when it comes down to it, what’s the first thing you put in your suitcase when packing? Is it a practical necessity, a comfort item, or something entirely unexpected?

In conclusion, packing rituals are as varied as the destinations we venture to. Whether you’re a meticulous planner or a last-minute packer, there’s no right or wrong way to fill your suitcase. So, as you embark on your next adventure, take a moment to ponder: What would your first choice be?
