After waking up on January 1st with a sore head and a craving for a bacon sandwich, you may have started to think about making a few New Year’s resolutions.
But forget about the usual stuff this year (which we probably won’t do anyway) and jot down some travel-related resolutions instead.
To help get you started, here are a few ideas for 2014.
Learn to ski
Have you always wanted to learn to ski but never got round to it? Well 2014 is the year to give it a go. After learning the basics at one of the UK’s indoor snow domes, you could be hitting the ski resorts around Europe in no time – and it’s not as expensive as you might think. Choose a resort with plenty of ski instructors and nursery slopes such as Alpe d’Huez or Isola 2000 in the French Alps before you head further up the mountain.
Visit one of the Wonders of the World
Rather than sitting by the hotel swimming pool for two weeks and topping up your tan, why not get out and about to see one of the Wonders of the World? The list of wonders has changed over the years – so make a list and tick some off. Whether it’s Chichen Itza in Mexico (above), the Colosseum in Rome or the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, it’s sure to be more inspiring than the back of someone’s sun lounger.
Do something daring
Let’s face it; many of us get into the habit of doing the same old things every day of our holiday, so make it your aim to try something a little more daring in 2014. Try scuba diving in Sharm el Sheikh, rock climbing in Greece or have a go at jet skiing in the Canary Islands to really get the adrenaline pumping on your next trip abroad.
Simply relax
On the flip side, if your typical holiday consists of trying to visit every possible landmark without pausing for breath, it’s time to slow down this year and relax. Forget about a manic sightseeing city break and opt for somewhere more laidback such as Hurghada in Egypt or the beautiful Maldives. Enjoy soaking up the sun, visit a spa and make sure the only exercise you do is walking backwards and forwards to the hotel bar.
Be spontaneous
Planning your holiday in advance is typically a good idea, but many people find it stressful arranging everything to the very last detail. Rather than meticulously scheduling activities for each day of your trip, just wake up and see where the day takes you. Wander along the beach and join in a game of beach volleyball, stumble across a bar you’ve never noticed before or climb aboard a boat and see what you can find.
