It’s easy to find great deals on city break destinations, but when you arrive fresh off the plane and pay for that restorative latte, you soon realise that all cities are not created equal. In Zurich, for example, the most expensive city in the world, that latte would set you back an eye-watering £4.76 – over four and half times the £1.05 it would cost you in the world’s cheapest – Chișinãu in Moldova.

So how do other places compare? We took five of our most popular destinations and looked into the average cost of food, drink and tourist attractions in each. So pack up your passport and come and see where your pound will stretch the furthest…

Prague

Food and drink:

  • An average meal for two in a local pub = £12
  • A pint of beer = £0.90
  • A cocktail in a downtown club = £4

Tourist attractions:

  • Prague city bike tour = £21
  • Prague National Gallery = £6

Prague really is one of Europe’s best value destinations and with a pint costing less than £1, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular with UK travellers. Citizens of the Czech Republic drink more beer per head than any other country in the world. You can find out more about Bohemian brews at the Czech Beer Museum – which is essentially just a large pub!

Barcelona

Food and drink:

  • An average meal for two in a local pub = £26
  • A pint of beer = £3.50
  • A cocktail in a downtown club = £6

Tourist attractions:

  • La Sagrada Familia = £12
  • The Picasso Museum = £9

Barcelona’s tourist attractions are good value for money compared to elsewhere in Europe. However, it’s a good idea to research the places you want to visit before your holiday as many popular sights, including the Picasso Museum, offer free or heavily-reduced entry on certain days of the week.

Rome

Food and drink:

  • An average meal for two in a local pub = £26
  • A pint of beer = £4.10
  • A cocktail in a downtown club = £7

Tourist attractions:

  • City bus sightseeing tour = £20
  • The Colosseum = £11
  • The Pantheon = Free

Rome is the cheapest place in Italy to grab lunch, and there are a number of inexpensive trattorias just a stone’s throw away from popular tourist attractions. A couple of our favourites are Osteria Della Suburra, close to the Colosseum, and Tre Archi on Piazza Navona.

Amsterdam

Food and drink:

  • An average meal for two in a local pub = £34
  • A pint of beer = £3.50
  • A cocktail in a downtown club = £8

Tourist attractions:

  • Madame Tussauds = £18
  •  Anne Frank House = £10
  •  The Sex Museum = £3

Amsterdam is the 4th most expensive city in the world for public transport, but don’t let that put you off – its compact size means that it takes just 40 minutes to walk from one end to the other so it’s unlikely you’ll actually need a bus or taxi. However, we would suggest making like a local and hiring a bike for that quintessentially Dutch experience.

Dubai

Food and drink:

  • An average meal for two in a local pub = £32
  • A pint of beer = £8
  • A cocktail in a downtown club = £11

Tourist attractions:

  • Burj Khalifa = £25
  • Dubai Museum = £0.60

There’s no doubt that Dubai is a luxury destination. Not only is it home to the world’s only seven-star hotel, but it contains some of the largest shopping malls in the world too. At these retail havens, shoppers will find cash-points dispensing gold bullion and Lamborghini police cars parked outside. Dubai might be known for its extravagance, but it’s also possible to see the city without spending too much. We recommend buying a copy of The Entertainer for BOGOF deals on major tourist attractions and restaurants, and you can also eat cheaply at the many Indian restaurants and shawarma vans dotted around the city.
